A long time ago, there was a king in the heavens named Hwanin.
환인에게는 환웅이라는 아들이 있었어요.
Hwanin had a son named Hwanung.
환웅은 인간 세상에 내려가 사람들을 돕고 싶었습니다.
Hwanung wanted to go down to the human world and help people.
그러자 환인은 환웅에게 보물을 주며 말했습니다.
So Hwanin gave Hwanung some treasures and said,
“너는 아래 세상으로 내려가 사람을 다스려라.”
“Go down to the world below and rule over the people.”
환웅은 신하들과 함께 땅으로 내려왔습니다.
Hwanung came down to the earth with his servants.
그는 바람을 다스리는 신하, 비를 다스리는 신하, 구름을 다스리는 신하와 함께 왔어요.
He came down with his servants in charge of wind, rain, and clouds.

어느 날, 곰과 호랑이가 환웅을 찾아와 말했습니다.
One day, a bear and a tiger came to Hwanung and said,
“저희도 사람이 되고 싶습니다.”
“We also want to become human.”
환웅은 그들에게 이렇게 말했습니다.
Hwanung said to them,
“좋다. 내가 마늘과 쑥을 줄 테니, 그것을 먹으면서 백일 동안 햇빛을 보지 말아라.”
“All right. I will give you garlic and mugwort. Have only these, and do not see sunlight for one hundred days.”
호랑이는 며칠을 버티지 못하고 동굴을 나가 버렸습니다.
The tiger could not endure even a few days and left the cave.
하지만 곰은 마늘과 쑥만 먹고 견뎌 마침내 여자가 되었습니다.
But the bear ate only garlic and mugwort, endured, and finally became a woman.
그 여자의 이름은 웅녀였습니다.
That woman’s name was Ungnyeo.

웅녀는 환웅에게 다시 기도했어요.
Ungnyeo prayed again to Hwanung,
“저도 혼인을 하고 아이를 갖고 싶습니다.”
“I also wish to marry and have a child.”
환웅은 그 소원을 들어주었습니다.
Hwanung granted her wish.
그리하여 두 사람 사이에서 아들이 태어났어요.
So a son was born between the two.
그 아들의 이름은 단군 왕검이었습니다.
That son’s name was Dangun Wanggeom.

단군은 자라서 나라를 세웠어요.
Dangun grew up and founded a nation.
그 나라의 이름은 고조선이었습니다.
The name of that nation was Gojoseon.
이렇게 해서 단군은 우리 민족의 첫 임금으로 알려지게 되었습니다.
This is how Dangun came to be known as the first king of the Korean people.

Korean Grammar Practice from 단군이야기

Let’s look at some useful grammar structures from the story!

1. -고 싶다: “to want to (do something)”

This pattern is used to express your desire to do an action.

  • Structure: Verb stem + 고 싶다
  • Example: 여행을 가고 싶어요. (I want to go on a trip.)
  • In the story, 환웅 said he wanted to go down to the human world.

2. -면서 -하다: “to do something while doing another thing”

It shows that two actions happen at the same time.

  • Structure: Verb stem + (으)면서
  • Example: 음악을 들으면서 공부해요. (I study while listening to music.)
In the story, the bear ate garlic and mugwort while staying out of the sunlight.

3. 소원을 빌다 / 들어주다: “to make a wish / to grant a wish”

These verbs often appear together in Korean stories.

  • Example 1: 저는 건강을 위해 소원을 빌었어요. (I made a wish for good health.)
  • Example 2: 신이 그 소원을 들어주었습니다. (The god granted that wish.)

4. 이렇게 해서: “this is how…” or “and that’s how…”

Used to explain a result or conclusion that happened through a process.

  • Example: 이렇게 해서 저는 한국어를 좋아하게 되었어요. (And that’s how I came to like Korean.)
In the story, 이렇게 해서 단군이 첫 임금으로 알려지게 되었습니다. (And that’s how Dangun came to be known as the first king.)
