K-Dramas and K-Movies in June 2022 (Part 2)

New Korean Dramas in June 2022


1. Yumi’s Cells 2 (original title: 유미의 세포들 2 /yumiui sepodeul 2/)

The anticipated sequel of “Yumi’s Cells” comes back with season 2. After a breakup with Goo Woong (Ahn Bo-hyun), another love finds her. Her co-worker, Bobby Yoo (Jinyoung of GOT 7) throws a doljikgu (돌직구 – express one’s feeling very straightforwardly) at her. Now, Yumi and her cells are once again falling in waves of feelings. Season 2 of Yumi’s Cells will premiere on TVING and globally Rakuten VIKI on June 10, 2022.


2. New Normal Zine (original title: 뉴노멀진)

New Normal Zine is a story of a 30-year-old journalist who prefers to stay a bit slower and is a bit old-fashioned in this rapidly changing world. Cha Ji-min (Jung Hye-sung) moves to a new position as an editor for the digital magazine “New Normal Zine” under the same parent company as her previous magazine company which was recently shut down.

At her new job, she meets Chief Editor Song Ro-ji (Hwang Seung-un), her new boss, and, at the same time, her work-friend since they started to work for the parent company in the same year. However, the chemistry between the two seems not to work because Song Ro-ji is a workaholic and totally different from Cha Ji-min. New Normal Zine’s premiere date is June 10, 2022 on TVING.


3. Alchemy of Souls (original title: 환혼 /hwanhon/)

In the country of Daeho (not a real country in Korean history), Jang Wook (Lee Jae-wook) comes from the noble Jang Jamily, but he is a troublemaker. Moreover, people talk about the unpleasant secret of his birth. Mu-deok (Jung So-min) is a talented warrior, but somehow her soul is trapped in a weak body. Jang Wook and Mu-deok accidentally meet each other and Mu-deok becomes Jang Wook’s servant. But behind scenes, she secretly teaches him martial art.

Another main character, Seo Yool (Hwang Min-hyun) comes from the noble Seo family. He seems to have everything. He is good-looking, intelligent, and even strong. Of course, this guy gets into a relationship between Jang Wook and Mu-deok. Alchemy of Souls airs on June 18, 2022. It will also be available for streaming on Netflix in selected countries.


4. Ultimate Weapon Alice (original title: 최종병기 앨리스 /choijongbyeonggi/ Alice)

Yeo-reum (Song Geon-hee) is a high school student who suffers from trauma. Yeo-reum (Park Se-wan) is a high school student but she is a professional killer. She happens to help Yeo-reum accidentally but wants him not to remember her. But, she meets him again when she transfers to a new school. The story gets more complicated when a criminal organization starts to chase them. This action romance starts on WATCHA on June 24, 2022.


New Korean Movies in June 2022


1. Broker (original title: 브로커)

The movie starts from a baby box where unwanted babies are left out anonymously. Sang-hyeon (Song Kang-ho) is the owner of a launderette and his friend Dong-soo (Gang Dong-won) works at the nearby church. Sang-hyeon occasionally steals babies from the church’s baby box and Dong-soo helps him by deleting the church’s CCTV footage of the crime. They sell the babies on the adoption black market and Sang-hyeon calls himself a broker of goodwill. However, things get complicated when a young mother, So-young (Lee Ji-eun / IU), changed her mind and comes back for her baby. She finds out about their illegal business and decides to go with them on a road trip to interview the baby’s potential parents. Meanwhile, two detectives, Soo-jin (Bae Doona) and Detective Lee (Lee Joo-young) chase them in order to catch them red-handed.

Song Kang-ho won Best Actor at Cannes 2022 with the role of Sang-hyeon. Broker will be released on June 8, 2022 in South Korea.


2. 2037 (original title: 2037 /igongsamchil/)

Yoon-young (Hong Ye-ji) prepares GED instead of attending high school while working part-time. She is only 19-year-old but she works hard in order to take care of her deaf mom. However, life takes an unexpected turn and she becomes a murderer and imprisoned. There her identification is no. 2037 instead of her own name. She meets her cellmates in cell no. 10, who have their own stories. 2037 will be released on June 8, 2022.


3. The Witch: Part 2. The Other One (original title: 마녀 /manyeo/: Part 2. The Other One)

A girl (Shin Sia) is the lone survivor of a destroyed secret laboratory called ‘Ark’. As she goes out to the outside world, she meets Kyung-hee (Park Eun-bin) and her brother Dae-gil (Sung Yoo-bin). They become the girl’s only friends. When she faces a criminal organization that threatens Kyung-hee, she overpowers them, and another chase starts. This action fantasy will be released on June 15 in South Korea.
