Name and History of Bupyenong Kkangtong Market
In the 1890s, the market started in Bupyeong-dong, Busan, under the name ‘Sageori Sijang,’ meaning the market at the intersection. In 1910, it was designated as the first public market in the nation.
After the Korean War, refugees began selling canned goods and other products from U.S. military bases in Busan, which led to the market being called ‘Kkangtong Market’. Kkangtong is a Korean word for cans.
